Why Twitter

September 9, 2011

You could be excused if, at first sight, you didn’t think much of twitter. A microblogging platform where you can type a short message of up to 140 characters? So what? But with a user base with an astounding growth of more than 80% since the beggining of the year, that overs now at the 100 million mark,  it is the size of linkedn, and only trails behind behemoths like youtube and facebook as a mainstream social media platform. It’s users are also extremely engaged. Half of them, 50 million, log in everyday, and write 1 billion tweets every week –  that is 1,000,000,000 tweets, if you like to count the zeros 🙂 You can get all the numbers at search engine land.

Twitter use has some interesting characteristics, such as the very high percentage of mobile access, and the frequent multitasking, with the user twitting while, say, watching TV, or in the course of live events.

For a number of reasons, twitter has become one of the preferred social media channels for business, and a thriving industry of “non-official” twitter applications and clients has emerged, that have become quite indispensable for the professional user. They can also be of pretty useful for the common user, and many are free, or at least have a free version. In the coming posts I will review some of the most noteworthy. I hope you will enjoy it!
